Bevin Lucas got into comics at a young age and ever since they have influenced her artwork. Now, she’s a print-maker at Maine College of Art. Comics have even become a surprising way for her to bond with her businessman dad. But in the world of comics it can be hard to be a female fan. Bevin tells us about her experience of feeling insecure in this stereotypically fan-boy community.

This project was in collaboration with Wolfgang Daniel and Frances Harlow.

At Salt our first assignment was to profile the classmate sitting next to us. For me, that was Emily. Here’s the story that I produced on her.

Emily always wanted to fulfill a familiar college experience, studying abroad. So one semester she signed up, but it wasn’t the typical Hollywood portrayal of fun and adventure. Not at all. Shortly after arriving to Mali everything immediately went south.

6: Light Shadows

Ashley Cleek and I set out to do a story with a limitation. The rule: keep it within a 5 block radius from school. Since Halloween was around the corner we decided to vox pop people on personal scary stories. One particular anecdote stood out, so we ran with it.

This is a Multimedia story about the work party organized by the Beehive Collective. In the summer of 2011 an ebb and flow of folks stopped by their home. We pooled our bodies to help host the 6th Annual Black Fly Ball in Machias, Maine.

4: Pizza

This past winter I traveled over 1,400 miles to three cities (Tuscaloosa, AL // Bloomington, IN // Chicago, IL) to document pizza stories. I discovered that people, all sorts of people, have this deep connection to pizza. It seems that pizza is as American as apple pie.

Do yourself a favor and before you start listening grab a slice, hell grab a box, because all this pizza talk will make your stomach growl.

ACT ONE. PIZZA CREW BICYCLE CLUB.
In Tuscaloosa, Alabama there’s not much going on besides football games to attend. So if you’re not into football then what do you do? For a group of kids Pizza Crew Bicycle Club (PCBC) was the answer.

ACT TWO. THE LAZZY MOON CHALLENGE.
Julian loves food. Especially pizza. So it made sense to enter a pizza eating contest. He thought this should be easy, but there’s more to competitive food eating than meets the eye.

ACT THREE. FREE PIZZA FOR LIFE.
One day Chris and Sam decipher a scam for an unlimited amount of free pizza. The crime at first is minuscule, but they take it a little too far…

ACT FOUR. SLICE HARVESTER.
According to the the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene there are 1,250 restaurants with the word “pizza” in the restaurant title. Colin plans on reviewing every single one. To check out more of his reviews go to his website Slice Harvester.

3: Defiance, Ohio
